Heart Rate Zones Made Simple: Train Smarter, Burn More

The most common cardio mistake isn't doing too little — it's doing everything at the same medium-hard intensity: too hard to build an efficient aerobic base, too easy to create real high-intensity adaptations. The fix is understanding five simple zones.
Where fat burning actually happens
Zone 2 is the underrated hero: at a conversational pace, your body burns the highest proportion of fat and builds the mitochondrial base that makes every other training easier. Zones 3–4 burn more total calories per minute and push your fitness ceiling up. The winning recipe for fat loss and health is boring and proven: lots of Zone 2–3, a sprinkle of Zone 4, and Zone 5 only as a garnish.
How to find your zones without a lab
- Estimate Max HR: 220 minus your age gets you close enough. (35 years old → ~185 bpm; Zone 2 ≈ 111–130.)
- No watch? Use the talk test: full sentences = Zone 2. Short phrases = Zone 3. Single words = Zone 4. No words, only regret = Zone 5.
Why classes beat lonely treadmill hours
Here's the practical problem with zone training alone: discipline. Left to ourselves, we drift into the mushy middle. A structured aerobic class solves it musically — the session is literally choreographed through the zones: warm-up in 1–2, a long aerobic middle in 3, peaks touching 4, cool-down back to 1. You get textbook zone distribution without watching a single number, plus music and a room full of energy. It's also, not coincidentally, the most enjoyable 45 minutes of cardio in Batumi — Joni's classes run four times a week, including the famous Monday 08:00.
