Your First Month of Boxing Training: What Actually Happens

Everyone who's curious about boxing training has the same two thoughts, usually in this order: "That looks amazing" and "I would definitely get punched." Let's kill the second thought immediately: in our classes, nobody spars and nobody gets hit — everything happens on bags, pads and in shadowboxing. Now, here's what your first month actually looks like.
Week 1: Your body meets its feet
You'll learn the stance, the guard, and how to move without crossing your feet — then the two punches everything is built on: the jab and the cross. Shadowboxing in the mirror feels awkward for exactly three sessions. Expect sore shoulders (holding a guard is sneaky work), sore calves, and the surprising discovery that three minutes is a very long time.
Week 2: The bag stops laughing at you
Your first real rounds on the heavy bag: learning to punch through the target, breathe on rhythm, and stay loose between shots. The tension in your shoulders starts dissolving — and with it goes half your punching fatigue. Somewhere this week, you'll land one clean 1-2 that sounds right, and you'll be quietly hooked.
Week 3: Hands start talking to each other
Hooks join the arsenal, singles become combinations, and the first defensive movements — slips and rolls — get woven between punches. Your conditioning has visibly jumped: the rounds that wrecked you in week one are now just hard. Coach Goga starts correcting millimeters instead of basics. Take it as the compliment it is.
Week 4: You look like you box
Combinations flow without a mental checklist, your feet move on autopilot, and pad rounds with the coach — combinations called and answered in real time — become the highlight of your week. Fitness-wise, the month has quietly delivered what months of treadmill never did: a genuine engine, harder shoulders and core, and the specific calm that comes from hitting things with excellent technique.
Practical bits
- Gear: for your first sessions, training clothes and water — we sort the rest. Once hooked, your own wraps and gloves are the first buy (Goga will tell you exactly what's worth the money).
- Frequency: two classes a week is the learning sweet spot. We run four weekly slots, all included in every membership.
- Fitness required: none. Boxing is how you get fit — every drill scales, and you rest as needed in the early weeks.
